The SeriousTruth

In a recent article called, “Make it Exciting,” a classmate wrote about voting and how it should be exiting. The writer presented ideas like ring tones, and online texting. The theory being that this would encourage young voters to line up to cast their vote. Being old enough to vote is a right and a privilege that should be taken seriously. Young American voters live in a country where mass market media targets our youth. Since the media is such a powerful medium, this would in fact present voting in a more favorable manner to young voters. If MTV says its cool then its cool. The Media should take more responsibility and inform and educate young voters about the importance of voting. The Media should offer more public service messages that directly target our youth. If the Media would present issues, in a more relevant facet to young adults, then perhaps our youth would gain enthusiasm and further insight of the Democratic process. Dealing with political issues may be unpopular with our youth, but funny ring tones are immature and do not represent American political society in a respectable manner. The politicians that are campaigning should come up with slogans that attract the young vote. “You are our future, your vote will determine the future.” “ Who you vote for today could have an impact on your education and ability to survive financially tomorrow.” “ You can line up to witness a sporting event or entertainment, so line up to vote and witness history impacted by you, the young American voter.” The only fun thing about voting is sharing the opportunity and privilege to vote with your father, mother, brothers and sisters and even your cool friends!! Being young is exiting, but at some point in life, you have to grow up and face the issues along with all your fellow Americans.

Win the Battle Lose the War

The American public is being subjected to political history. As election day draws closer and closer, the democratic nominees for our great nation’s presidential seat are embattled in a war of attrition. The mud slinging is reminiscent of elections when votes were won by force and politicians were ruthless. The fact that two Democrats are so divided on issues and platform, create a windfall of opportunity for the Republican candidacy. Because the republican ticket seems uncontested, the leading republican candidate marches on to what may be a victory designed by the division of the democratic party. The historical significance of this presidential election will be muddled on the very essence of democracy. It is the right of each candidate to believe in his or her ability to lead the American people. The fact remains that our nation was built on the principals of democracy and two candidates in one party offer a true choice. The two party system offers the American voters opportunity to choose the elected official that he or she believes will govern and lead the nation to prosperity. When all the votes are counted the winner will come from a united party Democratic or Republican. History will forever bear witness to the election of the president of this country. The two democratic nominees have already made history. How they will be remembered, is a different story. It would be a shame to see the last vote torn in half between the two nominees. This would hand over the election to the republican party. In the end, it all comes down to one vote, and its that vote that changes the future of this Nation.

An Unprecedented Package

In an article I read called “A Second Look…”, I came across a well rounded argument. If we, now by we, I mean “America”, are not falling into a depression, then why do we need a stimulus package. The $145 billion dollar stimulus package is designed to deal with the economic slowdown in the U.S and help recession. In theory, the “tax relief” will lead to an increase in consumer spending. However, I agree with my fellow classmate. The mere 600 dollar rebate is not going to boost the economy and in the end, may be putting America in a worse off situation than what it already is. This would put future generations at risk of a economic crisis or in debt. Rather than eliminating the problem, the government is just pushing it away for it to be solved at a later time. The rebate checks have both a short term gain but a long term loss. In the short run, America’s economy may boost, if citizens run and spent their rebate checks at
Wal-Mart” or other American retail stores. This would put the money into circulation and suppress the economic crisis. In the long run, it could affect the presiding President and place our Nation at risk of what we all fear, “Depression”, because of the amount of money being given out. Where is it coming from? It has to be borrowed, and it must be paid back. This is why I agree that this idea of the stimulus package is “unprecedented”.

Global Warming

Despite the evidence of the planet wide effects of global warming, many still believe global warming to be just another way to give funding back to scientific researchers. The issue at hand is of great importance, and will continue to alarm Americans so long as it is not resolved. Global warming leaves many asking the question, Is the top of the world melting?
Time is running out, stabilizing global warming does not happen over night, and it is to late to stop it completely. The change in climate has been attributed directly to natural, and human activity such as cars burning fossil fuel, power plants, and chemicals such as methane, nitrous oxide and many other gases that trap solar heat. All of these contribute to the global greenhouse effect and this is what causes Global Warming. Because of the rising temperature, due to global warming, the arctic is melting. If we do nothing, by the end of the century, we can expect to see a dramatic raise in sea levels. Today, this is already occurring, forcing many to move to higher levels of land. Imagine how it will be years from now. If the temperature continues to rise, many animals will be extinct and the ecosystem will be severely affected.
All humans should acknowledge that the threat of global warming is increasing with every minute nothing is done. It is up to each inhabitant of Planet Earth to take initiative and attempt to understand global warming, in order to stabilize it. The severity of this issue is real. Our nation is contributing, in all possible ways to saving our beautiful planet, however this is not enough. Some may never recognize the real cause of global warming, be it man made, or natural hazards, but in time, when our ecosystem has turned against us, maybe then will mankind wished they had done more.

Up Close and Personal: Debate shows what's right with Obama message

This article entitled, Up Close and Personal: Debate shows what's right with Obama message, implies that the debate between Obama and Clinton is going to be discussed. However, the writer seems to jump on a bandwagon that is headed for fair weather. The writers political views are scattered like useless fodder that will not yield substance. The writers criticism toward John McCain is biased, showing party favoritism. Although he states that McCain is concentrating on rebutting Obamas policies, he does not clearly interpret platforms and present open political views. This leaves the readier with an inability to grasp the articles essential point of view. "What’s right with Obama message," seems to be muddled in abstract, meaningless rhetoric. In order to achieve comprehension and lend simplicity to a statement, a writer must captivate his audience. In this case, the writer has done exactly opposite. He has led his readers to believe they will be reading an article about a debates points of view. Instead, he downgrades Clintons ability to challenge Obama. The reader is left without any clear definitions of the writers point of view. I read a condescending writer that is not an idealist, but a conformist that just wants to finish the paragraph and go to lunch.

Hola, Obama

“Si se puede,” ( It can be done), a slogan used by Cesar Chavez, is now becoming known all over the nation as “Yes we can.” Senator Barack Obama is endorsing this slogan in his campaign. The chant was made famous by the Mexican American Labor movement, that strove to gain rights for Mexican American migrant workers. This movement led to the creation of the United Farm Workers Organizing Committee, on August 22, 1966, which later became the United Farm Workers of America. This cant reminds Latinos of strength, courage, overcoming injustice and of the will to never give up. Garnering the Latino vote is a great challenge for Senator Barack Obama. Like Cesar Chavez, Obama recognizes that it is time for change. However, identifying with today’s Latinos is going to take much more than singing the battle cry of the great civil rights activist, Cesar Chavez. The Bill Clinton administration’s track record with Latino nominations to political office will play a significant role in influencing the much coveted Latino vote. Although Sen. Obama addresses many issues and claims that “Yes, we can heal this nation,” It is my political opinion that a strong platform is built on the foundation of addressing the issues that are important to the American Voter. While immigration reform is a sensitive issue, rhetorical cries that tug at sentimental feelings of unfair government, do not present an unambiguous choice for the minority voter. In conclusion, perhaps we can all learn that the American Voter, is an educated voter.

Presidential Candidate Race Clock

As Super Tuesday approaches, the Presidential candidates continue to make themselves known, just in time for the primary and caucus elections. On February 5th 2008, both republican and democratic delegates, will be elected to represent the state, in which they are elected, at the National Convention. This day is significant because it gives insight to which presidential candidate the state will be supporting for the presidential election. With the win still up in the air, the results for Super Tuesday are very much anticipated. In the article titled "Presidential Candidates Race Clock," from the LA Times, readers will view where each presidential candidate has gone before the primary and caucus election. Each candidates makes one last effort to influence the people on why they should become President of the United States. I chose this article and this topic, because I had no idea that on Fat Tuesday, the last day of Mardi Gras, this event was taking place. I was interested in finding out more on Super Tuesday, and so my search began.
